A backhoe (also called a rear actor or back actor) is a hydraulics-powered excavation device comprised of a digging bucket at the end of a two-part articulated arm, usually mounted on the back of a tractor or front loader to give the vehicle a dual-purpose. Backhoes were first invented in 1947, while the first vehicle-mounted ones appeared in 1957.

InGen used backhoes in the construction of Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar. Following various worker fatalities caused by escaped dinosaurs, InGen officially stated (e.g., covered-up) that the deaths were actually caused by backhoe accidents.
