Bracken (genus Pteridium) is a fern in the family Dennstaedtiaceae. It is notable for causing bracken poisoning and other ill effects when consumed. At least eleven species are currently known. This is a pioneer plant which quickly takes root in new areas, meaning it is able to grow effectively in recently-disturbed environments and also has the capacity to become invasive.
