Compound microscopes are a type of optical microscope developed in Europe around 1620, and modernized versions are still widely in use in laboratories today. They differ from simple optical microscopes by having a system of lenses each subsequently magnifying an image captured by the preceding lens in order to achieve a much higher degree of magnification than a simple microscope is capable of.
