Sound Barrier (S/F) / (JN)

Sound barriers are animal management devices developed by International Genetic Technologies. They were originally invented in the early 2000s as a means to discourage dinosaurs from entering an area without having to erect a permanent physical barrier. This allowed temporary, easily-removable barriers to exist in an animal pen, permitting human staff to come and go without obstruction while also keeping the animals in or out. The technology works by emitting a noise beyond the range of human hearing, but within the hearing range of the target animal. Many dinosaurs are sensitive to infrasound, so this enables the sound barriers to emit an acoustic signal that has an effect on numerous animal species but a negligible effect on humans.

According to the Jurassic Park Adventures junior novels, the first examples of this technology were not invented by InGen, but rather by the United Nations Bureau of Ancient Animal Affairs in 2001. Regardless, in S/F canon InGen had developed a more advanced form of sound barrier by 2003.
