TIR systems are large road transports operating under the Convention on International Transport of Goods Under Cover of TIR Carnets, or TIR Convention for short. TIR stands for Transports Internationaux Routiers (English: “International Road Transports”). The TIR Convention establishes rules for the transport of goods, particularly bulk goods, across international borders. Lorries and trucks operating under the TIR Convention bear distinctive blue-and-white plates to identify themselves; the term TIR has now entered the lexicon of multiple countries that use a wide range of languages, becoming a neologism for any large road transport.
