The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is a species of mammoth in the family Elephantidae, closely related to the modern Asian elephant. It lived from 800,000 to 3,900 years ago in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia, during the Chibanian until the Meghalayan age of the Quaternary period.
