Cephalopod Fossil (S/F-JWE)

Cephalopod fossils can be found in strata dating back at least 497 million years, beginning in the Cambrian period of the Paleozoic era. Some paleontologists believe cephalopods evolved even earlier in the Cambrian. Because of their soft and squishy bodies, fossils of cephalopods almost exclusively consist of hard parts such as beaks or shells.
