Snake fossils can be found in strata dating back 112 million years, beginning in the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era. Because snakes’ skeletons are fragile, they do not fossilize often. Many paleontologists believe that the earliest snakes evolved during the Jurassic period, although the oldest known fossils occur in the Cretaceous.
