Squilla mantis (S/F-JWE)

Squilla mantis, locally known as the pacchero or canocchia, is a species of mantis shrimp in the family Squillidae. Curiously, despite being one of the best-known mantis shrimp species, it is most often called by its scientific name rather than a common name. It grows up to eight inches in length and inhabits the coastal Mediterranean Sea and nearby parts of the Atlantic Ocean, emerging from burrows at night to look for food. Like all mantis shrimps, it is carnivorous. Squilla mantis is the only commercially farmed mantis shrimp species.
