The alpine ibex (Capra ibex), also called the steinbock, is a species of goat, a member of the subfamily Caprinae. It inhabits high altitudes of the Alps in Europe. Alpine ibexes almost became extinct in the 19th century, with a small population of less than a hundred survivors in Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy giving rise to the entire global population alive today. Thanks to conservation and reintroduction efforts throughout Europe, this once-imperiled mammal is now considered a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This species of goat is sexually dimorphic, with males growing up to 5.6 feet long and possessing massive horns, while females have much smaller horns and reach lengths of 4.7 feet. It is known to have evolved during the most recent ice age.
