Aquatic Mammal Fossil (S/F-JWE)

Aquatic mammal fossils can be found in strata dating back at least 145 million years, beginning in the early Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era. The first true mammals known to have evolved for aquatic environments were several genera of otter-like eutriconodonts, although several species of proto-mammals as far back as the middle Jurassic are known to have lived in rivers and lakes as well.
