Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a gaseous chemical compound whose molecules consist of one atom of carbon and two of oxygen; it is mainly produced by cellular respiration in nature, and in post-Industrial Revolution history it is heavily produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Atmospheric carbon dioxide is the biggest source of carbon available for living organisms to use, and plays a key role in photosynthesis.
