A foothold trap, or more informally a bear trap, is a type of animal trap which uses spring-loaded steel jaws to clamp down on the foot of the target, wounding and immobilizing it. While they are manufactured with many types of animals in mind, the most common are those designed for bears and other large mammals. As of 2022, foothold traps were illegal to use in 101 countries and ten of the United States.
