A hot dog is a German-American sausage dish consisting of a wiener or frankfurter, either steamed or grilled, served on a partially-sliced bun. It is commonly adorned with a wide range of condiments. The sausage predecessors of the hot dog were invented in Germany, but the practice of serving the meat on a bun was developed in the United States by German immigrants. Various versions of the hot dog origin story have been proposed; many place its invention in the Midwest, while others suggest Coney Island. The hot dog was invented sometime between the 1860s and 1900s, possibly independently by multiple people.
