Scurvy (S/F)

Scurvy is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. Fatigue and soreness of the limbs begin after a month without proper nutrition, and as the disease progresses, wound healing slows down and red blood cell count drops, along with deterioration of the gums and hair. Death occurs due to infected wounds or blood loss. Scurvy most often occurs in parts of the world where malnutrition is prevalent; in historic times it would often afflict people who spent months aboard seafaring vessels and ran short on food, so even today it is thought of as a sailor’s disease. It can be treated quickly and efficiently by consuming vitamin C, either in supplement form or through food. However, the symptoms of scurvy may require additional treatment.
