Borneo Elephant (S/F)

The Borneo elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) is a subspecies of the Asian elephant indigenous to the island of Borneo. It is considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Species since 1986, and is threatened by habitat destruction. They are considered some of the least aggressive elephant species and are generally passive toward humans. Although most scientists believe that the elephants migrated to Borneo from Sundaland during the most recent ice age, some alternatively believe that they were introduced to the island by the Sultan of Sulu during the 18th century and evolved into a subspecies after being released into the wild. They are slightly smaller than mainland Asian elephants found in Malaysia.
