A claw hammer is a type of hammer which has the added feature of a two-pronged claw on the rear side, which is used for pulling out nails from wood and other materials. This means the claw hammer is commonly used in carpentry; if a nail needs to be removed after being hammered into place, the carpenter need not change tools but can simply turn the hammer backward.
