Opossums are marsupial mammals in the order Didelphimorpha. They originated in South America during the Miocene and crossed into North America when the Isthmus of Panama formed around three million years ago. Although opossums are now found throughout the Americas, only one species (the Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana) can be found north of Mexico.
