The megalodon (Otodus megalodon) is a species of extremely large mackerel shark in the family Otodontidae. Its remains, mostly in the form of teeth, have been found on every continent except Antarctica. It lived from the Aquitanian to Zanclean ages of the Neogene period, from 23 to 3.6 million years ago.
